Correspondence with Alma Mahler and Franz Werfel, 1921-1949.

The correspondence includes a total of 22 items from Arthur Schnitzler (dated 1921-1931): 3 original items (postcards); typescripts of 16 items (15 to Alma Mahler and 1 to Franz Werfel); and photocopies of 3 items to Werfel. Amidst expressions of friendship and references to visits and phone calls, significant topics that arise are the marital difficulties and divorce of Arthur and Olga and the suicide of their 18-year-old daughter, Lili, in 1928. In his letters to Werfel, Schnitzler at one point expresses appreciation for Werfel's poetry and at another refers to his own current writing. The exchange of letters between Werfel and Heinrich Schnitzler in 1944 concerns the question of reviving interest for Arthur Schnitzler's work in the U.S., with particular reference to a proposal that had been made to produce Schnitzler's play Professor Bernhardi on Broadway.
